MIAMI — Researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine recently launched an online tool that allows fire investigators to voluntarily document their exposure to hazards at work.

The tool was developed in collaboration with the International Association of Arson Investigators, a Maryland-based group with more than 10,000 members.

The tool, called the Fire Investigator Exposure Reporter, is an adaptation of the Personal Exposure Reporter tool developed for firefighters. It is intended to help the IAAI better understand and characterize risks and exposures, and to document conditions that may spur health problems and insurance claims.

“Fire investigation is ultimately about protecting the lives and property of the citizens we serve,” said IAAI President Randy Watson. “To do that, we have to first protect ourselves.”

Filling out the free, online form or reporting via the Personal Exposure Reporter app should take no more than 10 minutes, said the module’s designer, Dr. Barbara Millet, an industrial engineer who helms the University of Miami’s User Experience Lab.
