VILLAGE OF BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. —  The Buffalo Grove Police Department partnered with the local fire department to take some kids holiday shopping earlier this month, using financial donations from a local group and other donors.

The emergency responders took part in the annual “Shopping with Heroes” event Dec. 10 at a Target store in Wheeling, according to a village of Buffalo Grove news release.

“Generous” donations came from the ‘Temple Chai Guys’ men’s group from Temple Chai and other anonymous donors, the release states.

According to the release, the police department identified 16 local children in need to help provide gifts for. The kids, the release states, have faced personal or financial family hardships. Police officers and firefighters volunteered to shop with the youth, who were guided to choose educational items along with their other desired gifts. The remaining money was spent on gifts for family and loved ones.

After shopping, the children were brought back to the police station to wrap the gifts, and have pizza and treats. The treat bags and wrapping paper were all donated by Target, according to the release.

“The officers and firefighters look forward to this event every year,” said Deputy Chief Michael Szos, who also participated in the event. “It’s a great way to give back and help spread some holiday cheer to those who may be needing it most.”
