At least 10 students at Van Nuys Middle School suffered an unspecified medical emergency on Thursday, Dec. 1, prompting firefighters to respond to the campus.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said the call about the students’ complaints of medical issues at the Sherman Oaks school came in around 10:30 a.m.

Capt. Erik Scott, a fire department spokesman, said in an interview with KNX News Radio that fire officials didn’t know exactly what caused the sudden illnesses.

He said the emergency may have been an “overdose situation,” but that the 10 students being treated were suffering from only mild to moderate symptoms.

The fire captain said officials had ruled out as a cause fentanyl, an opioid drug that is extremely dangerous and has increasingly shown up in California.
