SAN FRANCISCO — A person required rescue after plunging 150 feet down a cliff overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge near San Francisco, California firefighters reported.

The person fell from the former Battery Spencer at 5:11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, the Southern Marin Fire District said in a news release.

The retired artillery base, once part of the fortifications protecting San Francisco Bay, was built in the late 1800s on the Marin Headlands, according to the National Park Service.

Firefighters set up a rope system to rescue the fallen person, who remained conscious, and flew the patient by helicopter to a hospital with minor injuries, the release said.

“Southern Marin Fire District would like to remind residents, community members & tourists to please stay away from the cliffs’ edge,” the release said. “Pay attention to warning signs. They are there for a reason.”

The Marin Headlands are across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.
