An Ohio firefighter was seriously injured Sunday evening after he was ejected from the fire engine he was driving.

He was pinned under the front of the engine which landed on its side. Fellow firefighters utilized air bags to lift the truck and free him, according to a statement posted on the Middleport Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Engine 13 was returning from a call when the engine rolled on Storys Run Road in Chesire Township. Crews aboard other apparatus were on the scene immediately and started to assess the situation. Realizing they needed additional resources and extrication tools, they called for assistance.

The driver was flown to a trauma center in Columbus for treatment of injuries. Officials said he has undergone one surgery and others are scheduled.

There was no information about whether there were other firefighters in the engine.

Officials also noted that their guidelines state that all passengers must wear seat belts. “It is unknown at this time if the seat belt was used as we haven’t had the chance to talk to the driver yet,” the statement read.
