Aug. 2—California Highway Patrol has identified the bicyclist killed in a collision with a fire truck in Grover Beach as 29-year-old Dylan Tyler Smith.
On July 27 at about 10:20 p.m., Smith, an Arroyo Grande resident, was riding an electric bike westbound on Trouville Avenue in Grover Beach toward the intersection with 15th Street, CHP Officer Chris Proper said.
Meanwhile, a Five Cities Fire Authority fire truck was driving northbound on 13th Street towards the same intersection. Smith rode his bicycle into the intersection, collided with the firetruck, suffering major injuries, Proper said.
Firefighters from the firetruck gave him medical aid before he was transported to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital; he died of his injuries, CHP said.
Three fire crew members were riding in the firetruck at the time of the crash, Proper said. The firefighters were sent home the morning after the crash but are now back at work, Five Cities Fire Department Capt. Steve Lieberman said.
The incident is still under investigation. In a news release July 28, the Five Cities Fire Authority said it was co-operating with the ongoing investigation.
