Keith CFS brigade looking to safeguard the future with cadets recruitment drive

Have you always wanted to be a firefighter and have been looking for the right time to start? Well, there’s no time like the present.

The Keith CFS brigade is currently looking for kids who are interested in firefighting to join their cadet program.

With the area prone to bushfires during the warmer months, introducing junior firefighters to the brigade will not only allow them to learn important skills, it will also create a safer future for the town.

“Keith CFS runs a cadet program, training them in firefighting practises to become future firefighters, securing the future of the brigade,” the brigade said.

There are countless benefits associated with being a part of the program.

Cadets will learn about firefighting, all aspects, bushfires, structural fires, car accidents/fires, HAZMAT, BA (breathing apparatus), fire appliances and equipment.

“(They will) develop life long skills which include leadership skills, confidence, communication skills, working as an individual and in a team,” the brigade said.

Those who decide to join the brigade will be able to learn and work with some of the most experienced high-ranked firefighters in the region.

Learning from some of the region’s best firefighters will help provide a perfect transition into life as an official volunteer.

“Once your child turns 16 they have the option to complete their BF1 and attend fires as an official volunteer fire fighter,” the brigade said.

“(Being a cadet also) helps with future employment and gives you points towards your SACE.”

It costs nothing to become a cadet, but children must be between the ages of 12-16 to sign up. Personal protective equipment is supplied by the CFS.

The brigade will hold a three-week come and try period to provide potential cadets a taste of what the program entails.

Trainings will be ran every second week during school terms, and will take place on Wednesday’s from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.
